This post was originally put together a few months back but never published, as sometimes happens. When I update it I am unable to keep it in chronological order..
“The system is clearly overwhelmed and we must work together to address this humanitarian crisis and protect vulnerable populations,” Nielsen said in a statement released Saturday after her meetings Friday with local and federal officials in El Paso, Texas, one of the nation’s busiest border crossing points. “We know that if Congress were to act, or the courts were to enforce the law as written, we could address this crisis tomorrow. Instead we continue to do more with less.

“As I have said before, I ask Congress to please put politics aside and recognize this for the growing security and humanitarian crisis it is,” said Nielsen, who is visiting border facilities in Yuma, Arizona, on Saturday.
Nielsen arrived in El Paso Friday following the deaths this month of two migrant children who were in Customs and Border Protection custody. She met with officials there in response to the increase in the apprehensions of families and unaccompanied children crossing the border illegally, including those with illnesses.
To this day my friends assure me it is no crisis. Just business as usual. For months the media and all the well meaning people who revile Trump were throwing up a litany of 'why is the President actings as if it were a crisis?' How dare he send troops to the border. What's 2,000 people? What's 7,000 people? What's 10,000 people we have plenty of room? Wake up please dear people we do not have room for 10,000 poor people when we cannot and do not take care of the Half A Million American 'poor people' aka Homeless Americans.... and the additional people who are of 'the renter class'
This event at the border should be seen as a Demonstration and it should be a wakeup call to the Blue state people… It needs deep imagination, fresh eyes, realistic vision … something new needs to begin. A policy of Zero tolerance was way overdue. A policy of understanding how we undermine and corrupt 'developing countries' needs to be found. (one of the biggest ways is our approach to immigration as we basically troll the rest of the world for the best minds of the planet to come to the US.. then we also take just the hardworking poor. Who act like kerosene on the fire of our economic system…
Ask Bill Clinton who received the largesse of George Bush senior's ….
Provisions of the Act[edit]
The Act generally retained the preference for family reunification immigration, but place additional emphasis on employment-related immigration and created a category of immigrants from countries underrepresented in the immigrant pool.[11] Specific provisions of the Act:
- Raised the cap on immigration from 270,000 people annually to 675,000 annually, and 700,000 for the first three years after the Act's enactment, and increased the per-country immigrant visa cap to 25,600 (from 20,000);[11]
- For family-sponsored visas, set an annual minimum of 226,000, and a maximum set by a formula that generally yielded between 421,000 and 675,000[11]
- Created the diversity immigrant category for immigrants from underrepresented countries (those with fewer than 50,000 immigrants admissions over the preceding five years); since fiscal year 1995 this category (later called the Diversity Immigrant Visa category) has been allocated 55,000 visas each year[12]
- Granted Temporary Protected Status for Salvadorians fleeing violence in the Salvadoran Civil War;[11][13]
- Provided for the hiring of 1,000 additional U.S. Border Patrol agents, increased penalties for violations of immigration law, and expedited deportation proceedings[14]
- Amended the "medical exclusion" provisions of the Immigration and National Act to eliminate text that let agents exclude "suspected homosexuals," and removed the psychopathic personality and mental defect language that had been used for decades to exclude suspected homosexuals.[15]
